Chapter 1
“Is this how it feels to be happy again?”
Just a moment ago, Patricia was over the moon, but immediately she drove into the big mansion of Lucas, the smile on her face faded away.
Her heart pounded fast, and she had a feeling that something bad awaited her inside.
She took her mind off all thought and opened her bag. She took out her pregnancy test result and unfolded it for another glance.
Seeing her name boldly written on the paper, a bright smile she hasn't had in years displayed on her face.
“Finally!” She silently screamed in her head, clouding how the pregnancy might change her fate in the Lucas mansion.
She was the legal wife of Lucas Cohen, a young billionaire tycoon.
Marrying Lucas Cohen, the public believed her life was full of sugar candy and most ladies envied her for being the luckiest one to marry into the Lucas family, but her life was the opposite.
It was even worse!
It has been three years, but she never for once enjoys the sweetness of the bond. The big Lucas mansion was tiny for her to breathe freely and she labeled it as ‘my cage’ in her mind.
Cohen changed immediately after their wedding.
Charlotte, her mother-in-law, always victimized and called her names because she hadn't produced an heir.
Elsie, her sister-in-law, was another chaos. She showered her with hatred and enjoyed maltreating her.
Well, her three years of suffering will soon end. She was coming from the hospital and she was three months pregnant!
The testimony which would keep them shut was already in her hand!
She folded the result and returned it to her bag before she got down from the car and paced into the house.
She arrived in the living room and fell her bottom on the sofa, exhausted.
“I am tired.” She whispered, taking off her heels.
She rested her back on the sofa headrest. She glanced at her stomach and rubbed it, feeling the warmth of the blessing in her womb with a grin on her face.
A part of her mind convinced her to call her best friend, Anna, to break the news to her, but the most excited part kept her waiting for her husband.
She calmed herself and decided to wait for him, even though she was getting more nervous every second.
She got eager and could no longer wait till he would arrive at midnight. ‘I should call Cohen.’ She thought and instantly reached out for her phone on the table.
She nervously opened the contact and didn't have to stroll because Cohen's number was pinned on her phone contact list. Though it’s been over a year since they last talked through a phone call.
She dialed the number saved as ‘Cynosure’, but it was not reachable. She dialed it again and luckily, it was reachable, but Cohen didn't pick his call.
‘Please, pick it.’ She said a prayer in her mind.
She dialed his number once again and since he still didn't pick it, she decided to send him a text message.
[Sweetheart, please come home early today. Good news is waiting for you.]
She typed the message and as she wanted to click the 'send' option, Cohen’s voice came down the stairs, making her retreat.
“Is Cohen at home?”
She placed her phone on the table and slowly stood up, amazed.
“Why is he home early?” She wondered.
Cohen never came home early. He used work as an excuse to stay outside late and sometimes, he spent the night outside without giving a heads-up call or even a message.
A thought zoomed into her mind, making her eyes widened in disbelief. “Did Victor inform him already?”
She instantly turned to the stairs in curiosity coupled with excitement and speedily ascended the stairs.
She abruptly opened the bedroom door, fantasizing Cohen to open his arms and give her a hug with a sincere smile, but she couldn't believe what her eyes saw.
What!
In her front, on her matrimonial bed, was her husband copulating with her best friend.
The manner she opened the door shocked them, and they stopped to have a one time glance at her before they continued their sexual match.
Her heart stopped beating at the moment, and her body shook in despair.
The reality was clear and before her was the truth she didn't want to accept.
No! She wanted to accept it, but she couldn’t find a place for it in her head.
Her heart couldn't contain the betrayal she just faced from her two most beloved people.
How can Anna, her only friend, her confidant, stab her from behind?
She knew everything about her. How dare she betray her!
She trusted Anna and always ran to her every time her heart was filled with pain. She never knew Anna was so deadly.
Patricia was dumbfounded and everything seemed like a scary nightmare she couldn't wait to wake up from.
Since it wasn't a dream, she couldn't just stand and watch.
A word needed to be said so they would stop their shameful acts and her eyes would stop witnessing the sad scene.
She pointed at them. “A… Ann… Anna…” she called, her voice stammered because of the sorrow roasting her heart.
“Cohen…”
“How can you do this to me?” She questioned in a low voice.
Cohen fell beside Anna on the bed and moaned, rubbing his dick under the duvet.
“What’s all these, Cohen!” Patricia queried. Her voice raised out of frustration and anger.
Cohen stopped rubbing his dick and looked up at her in the face. “Why didn't you knock?” He questioned and without showing a feeling of guilt, he added, “this is what you get for barging in.”
His silly words arrived in her ear, making a surprised tone to escape her mouth. “Hun!”
His words were a stab in her heart and it caused more emotional pain.
She was numb and overwhelmed with sorrow, but she picked up her courage to protest. “This is my room. I can enter whenever I want and in any manner I am comfortable with,”
She ground her teeth, widening her eyes. “I did nothing wrong you did! And both of you should cover your face and hide!”
“You should be ashamed of yourself!”
“Ashamed of ourselves?” Cohen uttered, amazed. He scoffed and got down from the bed.
He picked his trouser from the floor, and wore it, turning to her. “Mind your words, woman.” He warned.
“Mind myself?!” She repeated his words, which didn’t cease to amaze her.
“I have no time to trade words with you,” Cohen let out. He turned to the cabinet behind him and picked a paper.
“Take.” He instructed, stretching the paper to her.
She collected it. “What's this?” She inquired, staring at the paper in her hand with confusion.
“A divorce paper. Sign it so we can end this marriage right now.” His heartbreaking reply came.
His words rang loud in her head, and she felt a bundle of painful strings pitched her heart.
She felt a slight pain in her head, making her feel dizzy and almost fall to the floor, but she governed her body to stand firm.
Cohen and Anna would rather watch her die than help, so she didn't want to act weak in front of them.
She couldn’t believe what she heard, so she asked again to confirm. “A divorce paper?”
“Yes, a divorce letter.” Cohen confirmed.
“Patricia, are you expecting an apology? It’s a divorce paper and you must sign it! You whore!” Anna intervened, buying herself an outrageous gaze from Patricia.
Patricia wished she could pull Anna by the hair and drag her around to show the world how evil she was, but that wasn't the right thing at the moment; her response to Anna might get Cohen more angry and ruin her tiny chance.
Would she watch the marriage she had been protecting for years destroy in a blink of an eye?
The same marriage she endured three years of hardship for.
No!
Never!
She was ready to do anything to save her marriage!
She fell to her knees and held Cohen’s feet. “I’m sorry, Cohen. Please forgive me. I accept I am not good enough for you as a wife,” she begged.
Pleading when she was not guilty triggered her tears, and despite how hard she tried to cage them, they streamed out in ease.
“Cohen, please give me another chance. I won’t let a word about this get out of this room.” She promised.
Cohen pushed her back, but she grabbed his feet again. He pushed her harder, and she fell to the ground.
She quickly stood back on her knees, ready to continue pleading.
Cohen picked his phone from the cabinet and walked to her front. “Who is this?” He asked, showing her a picture.
Seeing the guy in the picture, Patricia's eyes widened. “Thomas?” She called in shock.
“You were in a relationship with another guy before you met me,” he let out. He nodded and exhaled deeply. “Fine, he is your first love. But since you are with me, you should dump him!”
“You chose me already!” He yelled.
Patricia raised her gaze to look at Cohen in the eyes and she could picture how painful he felt pouring those words out.
“Cohen, let me explain-” she found a space to defend herself, but Cohen was already high so he cut her off.
“I should let you explain? What do you have to say?” He queried. He swiped the picture and showed her another picture. “Tell me, will you deny not seeing him? Didn’t you meet with him in secret?”
Immediately, as Patricia saw the last image, she had a clear picture of what was going on and she instantly regretted ever allowing Anna into her life.
Anna was the only person who knew about Thomas. She got them back together and planned her date with him. She must have manipulated Cohen’s mind and disclosed all her secrets to him.
Patricia gave Anna a deadly side look, but Anna looked away and relaxed her back on the wall.
“Cohen, it’s not what you think-” she tried to explain, but Cohen showed no interest.
“Just sign the paper, Patricia.” Cohen insisted.
“If she refuses to sign, why don't you guys meet in court?” Anna suggested.
Patricia ground her teeth with each other. She couldn't take the humiliation from Anna anymore and she stood on her feet staring at her with a dangerous gaze. “You this…” She let out, attempting to climb the bed to hit Anna, but Cohen held her back and pushed her to a side.
“Don’t you dare hurt her! Are you blaming her now? You whore!” Cohen yelled.
Patricia locked eyes with him. “Can’t you just believe me this once?”
He chuckled. “Believe you? Should I believe you after all this evidence?” Cohen let out. “Sign the paper and get out of my life. I don’t need you in my life anymore!”
Cohen’s last statement vexed Patricia, and she instantly took a bold step.
She didn’t care anymore!
She wouldn't be a scapegoat anymore!
She wiped her tears and sighed as she held the bed to help herself stand on her feet. “How dare you tell me to get out of your life because of Anna?” She queried.
She bit her lower lip and voiced out. “I prioritize your happiness more than mine. It’s heartbreaking the marriage will end on this long awaited special day.”
“What’s special about today?” He raised a question.
Patricia looked at her stomach and stared back at Cohen. “I am…” she wanted to reveal she was pregnant, but she bothered not to because she felt Cohen didn't deserve her anymore.
He didn't want her in his life anymore, so she also didn’t want to stay anymore.
She stared straight into Cohen’s eyes and announced. “I will sign the paper.”
