Divorce served cold

Miranda's POV

It was midnight.

The breeze rustled before dancing into the room.

The sound of the night was like music to my ears, it played a perfect tune and helped soothe my tensed-up muscles.

As usual, the night was going to end up with waiting up for a drunken Darren and guiding him to bed.

A tear slipped out of my eye and I quickly wiped it off as I had grown too used to crying by this time and didn't want to, at least not this night.

My eyes danced over the already set dinner table before I picked up a Bottle and poured in wine, the wine we ought to have used to celebrate tonight.

I still couldn't believe that I had thought this year would be different, Darren hadn't changed.

With a sad smile, I walked over to the couch and sat down.

The routine was like this every other night, the only difference was that today was supposed to be special to me.

I sipped the glass of Pinot Noir as the clock ticked away.

So many thoughts of what he could be doing out there flashed through my mind, especially on this very night.

Although I knew, the chance of him being out there thinking of Vivian and cursing our marriage was more of a reality.

My life was supposed to be perfect, but I was never good enough for him, and that was because I was the barrier standing between him and Vivian.

I was the wife he hated and never wanted, the go-getter who had eyes of being the Luna of the Shadow Pack.

The girl who has taken the help and kindness given for granted.

Even after being married for three years, I couldn't break through that wall he had built up around himself.

My neck was still bare, which, in other words, meant, Darren didn't want us bound by anything.

The wine was messing with me and making me remember things I had long wanted to forget.

Another tear managed to slip out, but this time, the universe seemed to understand my plight because the room was suddenly enveloped by this warmness, but it wasn't enough to lift my aching heart.

He won’t let me on stage and join any social party. During the three years of our marriage, I gave up everything to become his trophy housewife.

What did I get in return?

Nothing, it was more like I was invisible to him… Darren wasn't seeing me and even on the day we managed to speak, he was cold and resentful.

All of this was because he couldn't forget his first crush, Vivian. There was once a time I had to pretend like I was Vivian, so he could look at me, but nothing could make him look my way.

Unable to control myself, I took out the phone and prepared to ask him if he was coming back to eat dinner.

I was about to dial when I thought of his stern warning.

He had warned me never to call unless it was something urgent, and dinner with me on our anniversary wasn't relevant to him.

My phone slowly slid down my hands, as usual, I was going to eat dinner alone.

“Why do we keep on doing this?” I heard Emerald ask, bringing me out of my reverie.

“We were born for this I guess” I replied sadly.

“It's an unhealthy routine, Miranda” my wolf scolded as always. Emerald, unlike me, hated Darren and the mate bond, but she was a sucker for Rudy, his wolf.

“We deserve better, a man that couldn't honor our anniversary night isn't worth us”.

She was right, but this wasn't the first one he forgot, this was the third time and not the last time.

“We do deserve better, but we were given Darren for a reason best known to the goddess”.

“There's no reason better than our happiness Miranda” Emerald cooed, just like always, she was trying to talk me into moving on.

“It's all the goddess fault for giving us a cruel mate”.

“Don't say that, the goddess had better plans”.

“If you ever choose to restart in the future, promise you'd live for yourself and not for any other person”.

I chuckled, “I will, we are in this together if I decide not to. I have you to put me in check always”.

After dinner, I found myself dozing off on the couch.

It seemed to me like he wasn't going to come back this night, but I was laying on the couch in case he decided to grace me with his presence.

“Where's she?” I heard someone slur shortly after I lay on the couch, making me jerk up in a bid to defend myself.

“Miranda” I heard someone shout followed by the sound of glass shattering and noisy grunts.

“Darren?” I called out and rushed towards the direction from which the sound and his scent came.

I met a dizzy Darren, making my heart ache, he didn't remember what today was.

Not only that, but I treaded and guided him, carefully avoiding the broken glass on the floor.

Upon getting to the room, rather than laying down flat on the ground, he pulled me into his warmth before placing kisses all over my face desperately.

It almost seemed like he was drugged and as much as my body tingled under his touch it felt like I was violating his body.

“Darren” I struggled to say amidst his kisses, I tried to leave his hold, but he was demanding.

“You want this more than I do,” he said, and it silenced me at once, he was right.

I had always wanted his touch, and it always hit as hell during my heat period.

Against the wishes of Darren, I feel into his warmth.

I let him do it, his kisses sent shivers down my spine and I chose to savor every single moment of it.

It's been months since I got touched, and his touch was sending chills and shivers throughout my body.

“Darren” I moaned out as our clothes were peeled off by our touchy hands and landed in a pool on the floor.

Slowly, he grabbed me and slowly placed me on the bed, just like I had always wished for a long while.

“Beautiful” His soft voice cooed, making words difficult to leave my mouth.

I was fire for him, and his kisses did nothing to call down the hotness of my body.

I wanted more of him, and somehow it made me feel like this was a goddess smiling at me.

Darren was going to place his mark on me, and the vibrations he was sending down my spine made me certain of that.

After a night of my moans and swimming in ecstasy, I lay in his arms as we both tried to catch our breaths.

“I love you” I found myself whispering before placing a soft kiss on his lips.

“Vivian?”.

My heart panged painfully, but before I could question him, I heard soft snores escape his lips.

My mind flashed back to the message from Vivian, although it was from an unknown number.

“Thank you for saving my spot for me, but I'm back for Vivian and guess who he was proclaiming his love for on your anniversary?”

At first, it came in hiccups before it was blown into full-blown tears.

I looked away from him and hugged myself, never have I felt so empty and useless in my life.

The tears were never ending and neither were my sobs until I slowly fell asleep with pain burning in my heart.

The pain of this unrequited love and Darren's betrayal of the bond we share.

The morning came sooner than I expected, and I was woken up in the worst way possible.

Being pushed off the bed isn't the best way to wake up in the morning.

“What the fuck are you doing beside me and naked?” He thundered, making me wince as my butt kissed the floor.

I found my way up and stared at the raging Darren, he had this look in his eyes like he wanted to kill me.

My heart cried out because I knew last night that this was far too good to be real, Darren didn't want me.

He hated me and still does, last night meant nothing to him at all.

“You think this cheap act of yours is going to make me like you, huh!” He thundered.

“You …came home drunk, and then you started to kiss….” He interrupted my stutters with a laugh.

“How cheap can you be, huh, drugging me to feel good”.

“After deceiving my father, so we could get married, ignoring the fact that I had someone who I loved…and still loved, yours until think I could ever…" He stopped short and began laughing while staring at me in contempt.

His stare made me feel dirty and hated, I couldn't get enough of how much he detested me.

“Not only that, but you…you also pushed Vivian to go abroad thinking you could keep us away, huh?”

“Don't…don't say that” I stuttered, staring at him with pleading eyes.

“You are misunderstanding everything, Da...”

“Don't you even dare say my name, just this act of yours, This FUCKING DESPERATE ACT OF YOURS makes me want to puke in your face”

He called me desperate, and suddenly, I felt so desperate to know where I was standing in all this.

“Do you even love me?” I whispered, although it came out more like a squeak, he stared me straight in the eye and laughed.

“This night meant ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, I Alpha Darren would never think of you in that way!" And with that, he was gone, making sure to bang on the door after him.

I sank to my knees as the sheets fell off my naked body while crying my heart out.

It felt like needles were pricking my skin at his rejection and hate. He broke every hope I had nursed in me for the past three years just at night.

In less than 24 hours, Darren had made me feel worthless and loved and broken everything that made me not regret our union.

The next step now was to do as Emerald had always wanted.

He walked back into the room and I raised my head to meet his eyes that were staring at me in disgust.
