I’m hoping for even a small reaction.
But he just kept flipping through the book, barely acknowledging I was there.
He used to be distant, yes, but this… this was something else. Sharper. Harder. Like he’d built walls around himself and locked everyone out.
What happened to you, Alexander?Is it because of your fiancée?
I hated it. I hated not knowing him anymore.
So I said, as casually as I could, “She must be quite something.”
He didn’t look up.
I kept going, my voice light, teasing—at least I tried to make it sound that way. “Your fiancée, I mean. What’s she like?”
