Chapter 159

Maeve’s POV

I still haven’t shaken off the shock from earlier at the Council. The dagger burned me—and I can’t fathom why. Adie offered yet another theory, but none explained the pain it caused. I collapsed onto the bed in Draven’s chamber, having left the Council under the pretense of preparing for tonight’s ritual—even though deep down I knew that was a lie, and I could see Seraphine suspected as much. All I wanted was to escape that place.

My gaze drifted to the darkness pooling outside the window. I should be on my way back to the Council now, but suddenly I didn’t want to go. These inexplicable fears weren’t like me, but I couldn’t deny them. Deep down, I felt terrified, and I had no idea why. I just didn’t want to attend the ritual.

Maybe Draven was right. Maybe I needed rest.
