Chapter 19
I stepped quietly into Benjamin's room, holding my breath like the sound might disturb something delicate. The machines beside his bed kept ticking slowly, steadily but hauntingly.
I walked to the bed and sat gently on the edge. My fingers found his, and I held his hand tightly in mine. It was cold. My throat burned. I had promised myself I'd be strong, but I couldn't help it anymore. The tears just came.
"Benjamin," I whispered, my voice trembling. "Please wake up... Please, I need you."
My heart ached. He looked too pale, and he did not even flinch when I squeezed his hand. I leaned closer, pressing my forehead to his arm, begging silently. "You promised you would help me get my revenge. You can't do this to me now. I can not do it alone."
And then... something moved.
His fingers twitched.
I gasped and looked up quickly. "Benjamin?"
His hand moved again, just slightly, but enough.
