The rain had followed them out of the city.
It streaked down the windshield in nervous fingers, blurring the lights of pursuit until the world itself seemed to dissolve into a wash of silver and shadow. Evelyn sat beside Lucas, her trembling hands clasped over the small leather satchel that held more than jewels — evidence, names, truths powerful enough to ruin dynasties.
The engine hummed low as they veered off the highway and into a road that no longer appeared on maps. Lucas drove without a word, his face half-lit by passing flashes of lightning, eyes fixed and unreadable.
When they finally stopped, it was at an abandoned manor — a relic swallowed by ivy and time, crouched at the edge of a fog-wrapped lake. He killed the engine. For a moment, the only sound was rain striking the roof and the pounding of Evelyn’s heart.
“Here?” she whispered.
“It’s safer than the city,” he murmured. “No one remembers this place.”
