I watch her, swallowing down the bitter ache rising inside me. She’s breaking me piece by piece, and I’m letting her. I’m fighting a war inside my head, and I’m losing.
But the battle isn’t over yet. I’ll keep my distance, force down every instinct, hold back the flood she stirs in me.
Because when she leaves, and she will, I refuse to let her see just how deeply she’s carved herself beneath my skin.
I groan the moment I see her toss the bags into the car and saunter back toward me like nothing’s amiss, like she didn’t just deliberately test the line I’m barely managing to hold.
