I’ve always had a crush on my twin sister’s fiancé—Richard. I’ve always been right in the center of their love story because I was there when it all began, back in grade twelve. I remember the bonfire night vividly—the music, the crowd cheering, the way he smiled at her when he dropped to one knee and asked Julie to be his girlfriend. I had to pretend I wasn’t breaking inside.

Richard. The face of the school. The boy everyone wanted, our very own rockstar. I joined the school band just to get close to him, always trying to force conversation with him, but it didn’t matter. He never noticed. He never even cared about my presence, like I was nothing but a pile of trash. It hurt that he picked my chubby, shapeless sister over me.
