Chapter 13. Testing the Rules
Margherita was already awake when Gabriella entered with the breakfast tray.
The maid’s hands trembled slightly as she set it on the table. “Good morning, signorina.” Her smile was nervous, her voice too bright—like a child rehearsing her lines.
Margherita tilted her head. “You look tense. Did something happen?”
Gabriella shook her head quickly. “No, signorina. Everything’s fine.”
Margherita rose from the armchair and approached, softening her tone. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause trouble yesterday.”
Gabriella forced a small smile. “It’s alright. I should’ve been more careful.”
Margherita reached out and took her hands. “Were they harsh with you?”
Gabriella hesitated—too long—then said, “No. It’s fine. I understand. You must have been… lonely here.”
Margherita’s lips curved into a small, genuine smile. “A little.” She paused. “Thank you, though. The book was… entertaining.”
Gabriella’s eyes brightened. “Did you like it?
