Mike’s eyes snapped back to the present as a cold, creeping numbness spread through his body, fingers tingling as if frost had taken hold. Time seemed to slow around him. Jack’s once-limp half lunged suddenly, dagger raised with deadly precision. The ice that seemed to bloom from her very skin was sharp enough to cut through the air with a hiss. Mike barely had a moment to react.
He shoved her wrist to the side, electricity sparking along his fingers and into her arm. The dagger slipped from her grip, clattering against the floor before shattering into glittering shards.
“YOU!” Jack’s voice warped unnaturally, her tone a strange hybrid of anger and something alien, her pitch rising and falling in a way that sent shivers down his spine. She tried to strike again, slapping at him with hands that felt faster than time itself.
