Chapter 276. She's Gone

A sharp beep echoes from the garage downstairs and jerks me out of sleep.
For a second, I think it’s part of a dream. It could be. Only moments ago, a dream was all-encompassing. But I don’t even remember it anymore.
My eyes are open, so I dismiss that possibility immediately. I lie still, blinking at the ceiling, taking in the atmosphere as my mind sharpens, awakening quickly.
Something is not right.
Something feels off—too quiet, too empty.
I don’t need to look to my side to know that she is gone.
I feel it.
The air is colder. The silence heavier.
I sit up, scanning the room. The door is open. Lights are off. Nothing.
