Chapter 32. Blood Bath
Rae:
Bodies.
Everywhere.
Slumped over railings, sprawled in the gravel, faces bloodied beyond recognition. Guns discarded like toys. Pools of dark, dried red trailing into the shadows.
My breath catches. “Oh my god.”
Eliza parks hard, skidding into a stop. We both jump out, eyes scanning, hearts racing.
The metallic stink of blood fills my lungs.
Then I see it.
His coat.
Black. Torn. Soaked in blood.
Crushed near the corner of a rusted-out cargo crate.
My knees hit the ground before I can stop them. I grab the coat with shaking hands. My vision blurs.
This isn’t just blood.
It’s his.
Eliza kneels beside me, grabbing my wrist. “Rae. Look at me.”
I can’t. My whole body’s numb.
“He might’ve survived, okay?” she says, firmer now. “They’re not here. That means they got out.”
“But he was bleeding—”
“They’re not here,” she repeats. “Which means there’s a chance.”
