I don’t know how we got here.
Only when.
Kieran’s voice slices through the quiet like a blade.
“We’re here.”
I blink. Glance out the window. The parking lot of the private wing glares back at me under pale streetlights.
It’s 3:47 a.m.
I’m supposed to be sleeping.
But sleep’s a luxury I can’t afford.
Not tonight.
Not with Samuel awake.
We step into the hospital. The air is thick. Sterile. That kind of quiet that’s not really quiet—just filled with whispers of the unseen. The wailing walls. The scratching windows.
Top floor.
That’s where they’ve kept him. Far from everything. Everyone.
The elevator dings open. I’m out before the doors finish sliding. Kieran flanks me. Two of our guards stationed outside the hallway nod at us, then look away. Smart.
The doctor’s already waiting at the door. A file clutched in his hands.
“He’s conscious. Weak. But coherent. Be gentle.”
