Apphia’s POV
“No,” I deny quickly, the word tumbling out of my mouth before I can stop it. But even as I say it, my voice wavers, thin and unconvincing, betraying me in a way I hate. I know Lily hears it too. There’s no hiding from her. “I just miss my wolf,” I add more softly, my fingers curling into the fabric of my dress.
The truth sits heavy in my chest. I can feel the absence like a hollow space inside me—quiet, aching, unfamiliar. Ziora has always been there, even when she was distant or sulking or simply watching. Now, the silence where her voice should be feels louder than any sound.
Lily steps closer and wraps her arms around me without hesitation. Her embrace is warm and steady, grounding. She smells faintly of jasmine and something floral, calming in a way I didn’t realize I needed.
