But she turned him down, saying she had to study.

Cassandra just shrugged, the corners of her lips tugging up into a dry smirk. “Honestly, I didn’t think I’d end up at Mrs. Kane’s party either.”

“I highly doubt anyone can make the great Miss Taylor do something she doesn’t want to,” Moses teased lightly.

“Oh, but someone can.” Cassandra tilted her chin toward a certain direction. “See that Empress over there? That’s Grandma Evelyn.”

“Why would Mrs. Taylor suddenly bring you here?”

Moses looked genuinely surprised. He knew the Taylors well enough to understand that Evelyn wasn’t exactly fond of Cassandra. For her to bring her to such a high-profile event… that was unexpected.

“No idea,” Cassandra replied flatly, clearly not all that interested in her grandmother’s reasoning. “Anyway, let’s not waste time on that. I’ve got a minute—catch me up on how the company’s doing.”
