"Who told you about LA?" Kat asked.

"Jess mentioned it," I said. "She said to ask you. So I asked."

"Well, technically you didn’t ask," Kat said playfully. "You commanded."

"Yes," she said and stopped, continuing her literalism.

I let one of my hands glide up her thigh and looked her in the eye when I said, "Are we okay?"

"More than okay," she said. "I’m not running away. You need to know that."

"I need to get away from the scene," Kat explained. "Not us. Not the house. The Houston scene. The clients. The football players. The football parties. David. The drugs."

"I’m not sure LA can get you away from all of that!" I said jokingly. "No, sorry, I should be serious.
