After receiving a call from Jason that the law enforcement authorities had hauled Celine to the station for disturbing public order, I wasted no time in making my way there to look for her.

I immediately made a halt when I saw her sitting on a chair in the far corner of the room. She was motionless, but her eyes were swollen and bloodshot red. I heard Jason sigh heavily behind me.

When the chief of the local police department saw me, he walked over and greeted me with a smile and a bow of his head. ‘‘Good afternoon, Mr. Anderson...’’

‘‘I’m sorry for troubling you…’’ Jason spoke first after I nodded at the officer, acknowledging his greeting.

‘‘It’s okay…’’ he reassured us. ‘‘But... Mrs. Anderson is in a very precarious condition at the moment. We saw her outside Karl Smith’s house crying while she was hugging his lifeless body…’’
