Chapter 84

Emma was waiting in the kitchen when Alek finally came home the next morning. She’d been sitting at their breakfast table since six AM, still wearing yesterday’s makeup, rehearsing what she was going to say.

All her carefully planned words disappeared when she saw his face.

“You look terrible,” she said.

“Thanks. You look great too.” Alek went straight to the coffee maker without looking at her.

“Where were you last night?”

“Hotel.”

“Alone?”

Alek’s hand stilled on the coffee pot. “Are you asking if I slept with Katarina?”

“I’m asking where you spent the night.”

“At the Fairmont. In my own room. Alone.” He turned to face her, his eyes cold. “Though I’m not sure why it matters to you.”

“Of course it matters to me. You’re my husband.”

“Am I? Because I’m starting to feel more like your employee.”

Emma’s carefully planned calm evaporated. “That’s ridiculous.”

“Is it? You make major life decisions without consul
