Chapter 26. No Permission
Emily slowly opened the door.
Zayn was seated behind his massive desk, his fingers tapping lazily against the polished surface. The morning light filtered through the blinds behind him, casting long shadows across the room. The scent of polished wood and faint cologne hung in the air. A chessboard rested to the side of his desk, pieces mid-game, as though left behind mid-battle.
He didn’t look up immediately.
Emily stepped in hesitantly and stood near the entrance, her hands clasped in front of her. Her palms were sweating, her heart thudding loud in her ears.
“You’re finally awake,” Zayn said without lifting his gaze.
“Yes, sir...” She bit her lips in nervousness and said quietly “. I—I’m sorry”.
Zayn lifted his head slowly and looked directly at her. His face was unreadable, his dark eyes void of warmth.
“Sorry for what exactly?” Zayn asked with no emotion.
