Nicholas knew all along we were mates, and he waited. I glance at him, and he’s watching me with anxious eyes. I can hear the pounding of his worried heart. Is he scared I’ll reject him?

Slowly, I raise my trembling hand and gently stroke his strong jawline. He leans into my touch and kisses my palm.

“I’ve got you, Apphia. I’ll never hurt you,” he whispers, his sapphire blue gaze locked on mine.

I’ve got you. Those simple words brought me more comfort than I thought was possible. I nod, standing on my toes, and kissing him gently. He sighs in relief as though he was holding his breath the whole time.

He pulls me in his arms and kisses
