Maria's eyes widened in surprise, her arms uncrossing as she turned to face him. "What do you mean? What words?"
Alejandro's eyes flicked to hers, a hint of vulnerability in his gaze. "I mean, I told you we needed to keep our distance. But I was wrong, Maria. I was so wrong."
Maria's heart skipped a beat as she saw the sincerity in his eyes. "Why were you wrong, Alejandro?" she asked, her voice softer now, her anger and hurt starting to fade. This was all she ever wanted that day, a fucking explanation. A reason why he would push her away after everything they had been through together.
