The letter came in the dead of night, rain-soaked and smeared, but I’d know her handwriting anywhere, in any condition. She’d written that she needed to see me, urgently, that it couldn’t wait, and she couldn’t explain why, not in a letter, not at the risk of what she needed to tell me going public… which had me dressed and racing from Scarlet Thunder to Crimson Peak, the normally day long trip by car taking less than three hours.

Ravenfell is in the center of a torrential downpour, storm clouds hanging so thick and low I can only see the tops of the tallest buildings when I roar into the village, my car skidding a stop in front of her cottage.

The curtains are drawn against the storm. It’s early morning, but I doubt anyone without a clock could tell. It’s as black as night right now as I move at a near sprint to her door and slam my fist three times, praying she’s unharmed. That I’m not about to walk in on a bloody mess.
