I don’t want to leave Emory and my newborn son even for a moment, but the serious look in Rainer’s eyes tells me that whatever he has to tell me is urgent. I have my most trusted guards right outside the door. Nellie and Helga are there along with Emory’s mother. I know all these people would lay down their lives before letting anything happen to Emory and our son.
Emory looks exhausted. Her face is clammy with sweat. Michael is tiny in her arms. His scrunched up little face makes a fierce protective urge roar in me.
I lean down and kiss the top of Emory’s head. “I’m sorry. I’ll be right back.”
Her green eyes are half-lidded. She looks half asleep. She gives a little nod. I make my way quickly to the door.
Rainer looks antsy. I immediately ask, “What is it?”
“Jacob escaped.”
Alarm makes me want to start swearing. “What?”
“Alistair snuck into the dungeons while we were all focused on Emory in labor,” he explains. “
