“You’re about to meet your best friend for a lifetime, my darling Kayleigh,” Grandma Kathy said as she gently combed my hair. I had just taken a bath—if I remembered correctly, she was the one who bathed me because I had accidentally slipped in the mud while playing in her garden. Mom and Dad had left me in her care since both of their companies coincidentally scheduled their retreats at the same time. They didn’t work in the same company, but that was just how things turned out.
“You’re five years old now, aren’t you?” she asked, her voice warm and affectionate.
I nodded eagerly and beamed at her. “Yes, Grandma! I’m already five! My birthday was on July 24.”
“Who… who is going to be my best friend for a lifetime, Grandma Kathy? And how do you know? Are you a fortune teller?”
