Chapter 60. The Answer He Gave
Two weeks after the vows, Gabriel stood behind Diana in the bedroom mirror and fastened a necklace she had owned for years.
It was not expensive. One link near the clasp had been repaired badly. He handled it as carefully as he handled her engagement ring.
“There,” he said.
Diana touched the small pendant. “Does it work?”
He looked at her reflection.
“With the dress.”
“I understood.”
“And?”
“I was enjoying the question.”
She turned. The black dress had taken an hour to choose and ten minutes to make her doubt herself. His expression was beginning to repair the damage.
Tonight was a benefit dinner for a community arts program. Elaine had invited them. Gabriel had supported the program before Diana knew him, and Hans had supplied materials for one of its rooms. For once, there were enough ordinary reasons for them to be at the same event that Diana could stop inventing explanations.
Her phone vibrated on the bed.
