The certainty in his voice made my chest tighten. Before I could respond, the car pulled up to Hazel’s apartment building.

“This is me,” she announced, gathering her purse. “Mr. Knight, thank you again for an amazing evening. The show, the dinner—all of it was incredible.”

“You’re welcome,” he replied. “I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

Hazel leaned over to hug me goodbye, her lips brushing my ear. “He’s absolutely crazy about you,” she whispered. “Have fun tonight, and I mean the kind of fun that leaves you both breathless and craving more.”

I felt heat rush to my face as she pulled back with a knowing grin.

“Text me tomorrow,” she said, louder this time. “With ALL the details.”

“I’m going straight home,” I insisted. “Mom’s waiting up.”

Hazel gave me a look that clearly said she didn’t believe me. “Sure you are, honey. Straight home... eventually.”
