Chapter 23. Blatant Rejection

"Are you ready to leave now?" Hugo's deep voice cut through the silence, causing me to jerk in shock.
I quickly rose to my feet, wondering what he might be doing at the field under the scorching sun. He wasn't supervising the work today, at least I was sure of that.
"Ready to leave?" I asked, "I don't understand what you are talking about." I made my confusion clear.
"You've forgotten how much you want to help that young lady, right? Now is the perfect time to go." He urged me on, cocking his head to the side in pride as if he had accomplished a commendable feat.
"But I'm working, and I don't want Vito to be on my case. He has given me enough trouble already." I stated and he shrugged.
"I've already taken permission on your behalf. You can take the remaining day off, no one will query you for that and Vito knows better than to run his mouth carelessl
