Chapter 59
Steve rose from his seat and approached Xavier, his cell phone firmly grasped in his hand. I could hear him telling Xavier to quit being an asshole and to get his temper under control because he was genuinely scaring me. I sat there, anxiously twisting my hands together and fighting back tears that threatened to spill.
"I'm truly sorry, Aadita," Xavier murmured softly.
I didn't reply, not because I didn't want to, but simply because I felt incapable of doing so. I noticed the shame that washed over Xavier's face; it was unmistakable. Yet, I couldn't break through my overwhelming concern for my brother to address it. My mind raced with questions about what the heck Steve was up to.
When Steve returned, his phone still in hand, he took a seat on the coffee table directly across from me.
"Your brother is fine," he said reassuringly.
