The screams didn’t bother me.
I didn’t care about any of that. I wanted this. I was aching for it. I ate on it. I stood and rose with it.
The scent of blood or the cries of the wolves terrifies as the miss choked out their hopes was something that I was eager to hear. Those were sounds of progress, our promises that were being fulfilled.
But that word…
Mom.
It clawed at the edge of my thoughts, even as the war I unleashed burned across their lands.
No matter how hard I try to ignore it, it was stuck with me. I could hear it playing in my mind over and over again, as if on repeat. The way that she looked at me, the way that she spoke, the way that our eyes met. Both the woman.
I stood at the window of Giovanni’s ruined chapel, watching from afar as the forest swallowed their packhouse. I should’ve felt satisfaction. I should’ve felt power.
But instead… there was a strange, pulsing ache I didn’t understand.
