The infirmary was too quiet.
And with every passing day, I just found it heavier for me to breathe, harder for me to contain myself, to be able to understand how everything went the way that it was.
I stood in the doorway, staring at her.
Delilah.
She lay still on the cot, her dark hair fanned over the pillow, her face pale against the sheets. The bandages across her shoulder and chest were fresh, but her skin was clammy, and her breathing shallow.
A week.
A whole goddamn week she’d been like this.
And it was killing me.
There, no matter how hard I tried to stand strong, to tell myself that we’ve won this, looking at her, it didn’t feel like we won. It just felt like we lost something more than I wanted to admit. And now I couldn’t take a breath without wondering how things were going to be.
