Chapter 35

Liam

I stayed with Claire until she finally drifted off. Until, despite herself, she allowed her body to give in to the exhaustion.

Her body was still trembling when I laid her back against the pillows, her eyes glassy and exhausted. Her body was drained and I knew that everything that she said was going to keep playing in my mind. It was not going to leave me as easily as I wanted it to because deep down, the regret that she felt was one that I couldn't help but find myself feeling pain for.

The doctor assured me she’d stabilize. That her body would recover. They assured me that she would be able to have with their children, that it is normal for a woman to lose her child even in her situation, even as far as she went.

But the emptiness in her eyes when she whispered I lost it… I failed… before sleep claimed her…

That was something no doctor could fix. That was not something that they could easily erase from my mind, even though I wi
