They stood there silently as Ann tried to come to terms with what had to be done as Adam’s gaze burned into her very soul..
There were no guards. No Coral. No Eva. Just the quiet throb of the palace at night and the way the room felt too small for all the things left unsaid between them.
Ann didn’t move. She stood by the window with the curtains half-drawn, moonlight cutting her profile into something dangerous and soft at once.
Her heart beat too loud in her own ears. She could feel him without looking...the heat, the strain of restraint, the wolf pressing up against his ribs like it wanted out.
“Say it again,” he said, voice rough. “Say we won’t speak the war aloud until we’re ready.”
“We won’t,” Ann said, keeping the tremor from her voice. “Not yet.”
His jaw flexed, his last thread of patience pulling tighter as he took a step forward, then another. The air between them vibrated almost painfully.
“Adam...”
