My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence of the villa. Avery’s limp form in my arms felt impossibly fragile, her breath shallow and ragged. The weight of her life, her future, suddenly felt like an unbearable burden.

I ran, my boots pounding against the marble floors, the echoes of my frantic footsteps the only sound in the opulent, yet suddenly sterile, hallway. I just needed to get her somewhere comfortable.

“Guards! Guards!” I roared, my voice raw with panic. “Get me the best healers in the pack! Now!”
