Chapter 51. Empty Seat

As Alaric entered, almost everyone in the room, except Emerald, stood to greet him. Their eyes were filled with admiration, fear, and respect. Mr. Valentine immediately set down his wine glass and stepped forward with his wife to greet Alaric.

"Mr. Corrigan, it's an honor to have you here."

Before they could approach further, Alaric raised his hand, respectfully but with a hint of distance.

"No need for formalities. We're all family here. Let's keep it casual."

"Uncle, please take a seat," Ethan said, almost ingratiatingly.

"No need. I'll just find an empty seat."

Emerald watched as everyone showered Alaric with praise, and once again, she felt the stark difference in their social status. While she was lost in thought, Alaric glanced her way. Their eyes met for a moment before he walked toward her table, sending a flutter of nerves through her chest.
