Chapter 99

I spent most of Tuesday and all of Wednesday on the island with Marcus, organizing the cleanup and touring the sad remains of this heinous vandalism. My stomach starts to ache as soon as I set foot on the island and see the wreckage—smashed machinery, overturned sheds. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

The culprit does it viciously, and now I want two things: find that son of a bitch and make it right. Because fixing it is my way of flipping him off and telling him he lost.

Thursday morning I’m back in the office, but the day isn’t looking much better. Nick has international calls all day, which means I get to my desk at four in the morning. The only upside of starting so early is I don’t have time to dwell on the sabotage or worry about a detective showing up to arrest Marcus. Thank God they didn’t arrest him Tuesday afternoon or all of Wednesday, but I’m still on edge.

The morning is a flurry of calls, emails, and minor crises—both professional and personal
