The room hummed with anticipation long before 8 a.m. Traders’ murmurs, market data scrolling across wall-long screens, and the subtle drone of espresso machines layered into a symphony of controlled chaos. Harper stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of the Ledger Ventures boardroom, clad in a charcoal sheath skirt that hit just below the knee, and a pale silk blouse in shades of dawn. The Clause 5.7 earpiece pulsed faintly beneath her collar, a reminder of tonight’s silence.
Knox entered silently behind her, his tailored suit precise, tie undone enough to suggest command. He laid a single hand on her shoulder—a grounding, unspoken covenant—and slipped a small tracking token under her cuff. Her lips curved in a tiny, private acknowledgment: Code compliance active.
“Our moment,” he said lightly, voice careful.
She looked at him—face composed but the pull in her chest clear. He nodded once, backing away into the corner, the wordless guard she’d licensed.
