Chapter 124. Journey to an Uncertain Future
Maggie POV
The carriage jerks roughly as we travel along the dirt and gravel roads. The two men who came to take me sit out front leading the horses, and I can hear them laughing every time we hit a pothole, knowing I can’t see out front and have no way to brace for it.
But I don’t care. My mind races, trying to figure out why my parents and Matthew hate me so much that they’ve... given me away, apparently.
I think of all those nights sitting with my mother, sewing dresses and talking about my future. I’d never questioned whether she loved me, the way she sat next to me and patiently showed me how to keep the stitches straight, or the look in her eyes when we spoke of my future mate and the children I wanted.
And my father....
