“So Bruno is betrothed to Lisa?” Shelley’s voice came again.

Her parents’ eyes stabbed her.

Bruno’s eyes widened. “What? Someone had to ask the important questions.”

Bruno swallowed tightly, recognizing that look on her face.

“I promise you. We weren’t betrothed or whatever. It was just a joke, I swear. Our fathers are friends, that’s all—nothing serious. Lisa and I don’t even have anything in common.”
