Chapter 42. Limits of Humiliation
Aurora’s POV
At first, I couldn’t see anything in the darkness of the room. My breathing was uneven, my heart hammering as I tried to make sense of where I am. There wasn’t even a flicker of light inside the room and the door had shut off my connection to the outside completely.
The air is thick, stale, as if no one has been here for a long time, almost like this is some kind of a warehouse. My hands reach out in front of me, blindly searching for something—anything—that will give me an idea of my surroundings. But all I can feel are the walls, cold, and crumbling as if the paint was peeling off of it.
And then, a light flickers on.
I squeeze my eyes shut against the sudden brightness, my pupils protesting the change. My skin prickles as dread slithers its way up my spine. But before I could even get my bearings in order…a voice follows the illumination, smooth yet carrying an edge of something sharp, something dangerous.
“Aurora.”
