She noticed him first not for his face—though it was striking—but for his voice. Deep, warm, and measured, it seemed to draw her closer without her consent. His sermons were not like the others; they were not rigid pronouncements, but living things that stirred the soul. There was a gentleness there, yes—but also something beneath it. A tension. A force she could not name. A hunger? A need? 

From the shadows of the chapel, Emilia found herself studying him. The curve of his mouth when he paused to think. The way his hands spread over the open Bible. The slight furrow between his brows when he read aloud. And always, t
