"Case dismissed."

The sound of the gavel signaled the end of the trail and the beginning of my failure. So this was what it meant to lose a case, this was the ache and embarrassment to be felt at this point.

"What a waste of time and money." Mr. Benson, my client lamented.

"Sir, I did all I could."

"All you could? Look how he destroyed me and the worst part you couldn't even protect me."

I remembered the way he mercilessly pounded me, leaving me defenseless. I prayed for the earth to open and swallow me whole.

"You what? This is utter nonsense, I was promised the best female attorney to charm the jury into me winning and this is what I get."

He was referring to Elsie, I knew he was, she was the one who always brought clients to our firm and it boosted the reputation of the company. The number of cases she had lost is close to negligent compared
