Three steps behind
My mind races. Fast. Wild.
There’s no time to think, only react.
So I do the one thing I still can.
I speak, my voice hoarse, desperate.
“You know, you talk a big game for someone who’s so easily distracted.”
That gets her.
Selene freezes.
Her head slowly turns toward me. “What did you just say?” Her voice is low. Dangerous.
I swallow hard. But it worked. I got her attention—at least for now.
I force a shrug, pretending to be unaffected. “Yes, Selene. What’s the point of wasting a bullet on him? He’s not even important. Or don’t tell me… you actually get distracted that easily?”
A flicker of something—irritation, maybe—dances across her face.
“You should be focused on your plan,” I continue, lifting my chin. “And your plan is me, isn’t it? I’m the real prize here. You never know what might happen next.”
She chuckles darkly, taking one slow, calculated step after the other toward me. “Unbelievab
