The fireworks are making my skin crawl.

My tears mean nothing; I need to get Chantel to respond to me.

Then I hear it.

Multiple gunshots.

Fighting.

Chantel looks at what's going on, her face neutral but her chest is moving up and down even quicker. She's almost hyperventilating. I clasp her cheeks, making her look at me instead of what's going on.

"I need to do this," I start to murmur to myself, feeling the weight of responsibility. It's my fault. It's all my fault.

"No! Stop!" I remind myself. She needs you. She needs you. I can't lose my shit. Not now.

"Darling, please," I pleaded with her, desperation creeping into my voice.

Damon is making his way towards us, and I know I have to let her go. I have to fight him off, and I can't hold her and fight him at the same time.

"Can't you see that she doesn't want you?"
