She had no one, because her disappointment with Phebe had made her distance herself from everyone, who also showed no interest in befriending her. The men stared at her without interest, and she believed that this was because she was unattractive. She wasn't pretty enough for anyone to approach her with an interest in starting a relationship. She thought it would never bother her, but it did. And if she wanted to live alone, without love, she should live far away from everyone. There, watching other women achieve these things, she would feel increasingly hurt. She would become an increasingly bitter woman.
