The dense forest finally gave way to open fields as we reached the border. The last remnants of light clung to the sky, the stars appearing one after the other. 

I could hardly believe we’d made it this far after days of trekking through the wilderness, evading Alpha Rolan’s patrols and the wolves loyal to him. 

My heart pounded in my chest, a mix of relief and anxiety that we were finally out of immediate danger, but still far from being safe.
