Diego and I stared at each other like two men waiting for the same explosion.
Both of us holding a lit match.
Both of us hoping the other would admit what was burning.
I swallowed, rubbing the bridge of my nose. “Go first.”
Diego shook his head instantly. “No. You go first.”
Of course he’d do that. Of course. The universe hadn’t punished me enough today.
I blew out a slow breath. “Fine.”
I dropped onto the armchair opposite him, my bones protesting, my brain still vibrating from Loren’s screeching.
“She called,” I said flatly.
Diego blinked. “Who?”
I raised an eyebrow.
He closed his eyes. “Right. Never mind. Go on.”
“She was hysterical,” I continued. “Accusing me of sending Kenna and other men to attack her. Screaming about how I’ve ruined her life. Blackmail, threats, nonsense. Half the things she said didn’t make sense.”
Diego frowned. “Other men?”
“Yes. That part confused me too.”<
