“You can lock up, right?” She didn’t wait for an answer. “There’s only one table left, and it’s already past closing. No reason for four of us to be here.”

I stared at her, at the booth, and then at Jasper, who instantly looked away. These people must be kidding me.
“You seriously want me to close alone?”
She raised an eyebrow like I’d asked if the sky was blue. “You’ve stayed longer before. And besides, you seemed pretty committed this morning, showing up on your day off. Here’s your chance to keep proving you belong.”
Why does everyone keep thinking today is my day off? I signed the contract to show up at work every Sunday.
I opened my mouth to argue, but she’d already turned away. Before I could follow her and talk some sense into her, Jack came out of the back, slipping on his jacket.
“You leaving too?” I asked, a bit more sharply than I meant to.<
