Chapter 20

Cecrops stood up and slithered across the house to one of the bedrooms. Julie heard some rustling around, a drawer opening, a lock clicking, and then she saw Cecrops coming back towards them.

Cecrops was holding a long, thin box and a large book. He sat back down and placed both objects on the small living room table between them.

“This,” he said as he opened the box, “is a magic wand. It was created by a powerful wizard centuries ago and was passed along to all of the Cecrops’ ancestors until me. We were told that when the time was right, we would know when to take this wand out. We were told that when the time came, a witch or wizard would have the power to use the wand to save the multiverse. I believe that time has come. But the only way to know for sure is to allow you, Chloe, and you, Julie, to try the wand and see if it bends to either of your wills.”
