Chapter 40. A Small Surprise (2)

Dinara was already waiting for him at the kitchen island with a hot cup of coffee when he joined her.
He murmured his thanks and took the stool opposite hers.
“Are you hungry?” she asked after a tense moment.
Only for you. He would have loved to say those words but it might be too soon. Rafael shook his head no. “How about you? I can make breakfast,” he offered.
“This is enough for now. I’m not hungry yet,” she answered. Silence ensued. Then she squared her shoulders, lifted her chin, and blurted out. “I didn’t know who you were when I came to live with Tio and Tia Juanita at your hacienda. I had short-term memory loss when I was attacked and kidnapped by Lemonte’s men. Tio found me floating in San Francisco Bay the day I escaped my captors. I never knew who I was until...well the morning after.” She blushed at the memories assailing her and she looked away.
“The morning after our first time,” he continued quietly. It seemed so long ago yet
