Tony heaved on the door, yanked it open and hopped into the front seat, right beside Mary, whose stomach was not only churned by his presence, also by the exudates of rum that came from Tony. And she wondered how much of that rum in his hand had gone down his throat just to get him gingered for his revenge on her. With the corner of her eyes she stole a glance at him and thought it wise to let him break the silence after he sighed and gritted.
“We will meet again.” His voice was spiky and nothing short of a gentle, slow bang on a bass drum that would soon increase in tempo.
A sip. A grin on his face.
“I thought you were going to check up on me since you didn’t see me at the hospital. Or didn’t they tell you about my escape from that damn hospital, where you stood right in front of me and kissed a doctor?”
